I have noticed a very common characteristic about people working in tech. And it’s not a very favorable one…
Their ability to deal skilfully with very complex technical issues doesn't
always match their communication skills. Actually it seldom does.
Why is that ?
It may be due to 2 factors :
1) The education system that greatly emphasizes scientific & technical
skills over what is inappropriately called " soft " skills.
Creating in the end, amazing technicians having very often a hard time selling themselves and feeling ok speaking in public.
2) A pervasive belief that the so called "soft" skills can be left to others.
So, we end up in a divided world, made up of " soft " skills people and " hard " skills individuals.
If this appears like a gross caricature, PLEASE ! do not LAUGH ! This is
the situation as it's prevailing now, almost everywhere in Asia and in
the West as I have recently seen it myself in Europe.
If you struggle feeling comfortable while speaking in public and pushing
forward your ideas it’s not because you’re not good enough at what you
do.
It’s just about making improvements with your set of soft skills.
What about you ? How have you developed these specific skills ?
